The traveler's best new tool for planning a trip to Belize! |
||||
| In years past, if you were trying to decide where to go on your vacation, and most importantly, where to stay, you would go to your local book store and stock up on guide books. If you were lucky, some would be fairly up to date, but others could be four to five years old. In today's fast-paced, ever-changing world, a guide book that is only two years old could be full of erroneous information! Not to mention it would take an extra backpack to carry your reference library with you on the trip.
Now the internet has become a publishing industry in itself, and everyone's favorite tool for trip planning. Again, however, some pitfalls prevail: Nearly every lodging facility on the planet seems to have a fantastic website, seducing prospective guests into believing that this hotel or resort would fulfill their dreams. Now the problem is that all those web pages are basically the property's own advertising, and often the product in reality bears little resemblance to the actual facility. How many times have you entered a hotel room only to discover it looks nothing like the room featured on the hotel's website?? Just as with a print brochure, a website may feature one photo of a room interior (generally they use a Honeymoon Suite for this); and you find yourself stuck in something completely different. Or perhaps you expected the image of a white sandy beache with swaying coconut palms to be the view from your room--- only to discover your room has few windows or no view at all! So, fellow travelers, yet again we are faced with the dilemma of trying to find objective, up-to-date information to help us get the most of our hard-earned money. Happily, in the last few years, an independent, well managed website has appeared and is available to everyone, at no charge. www.tripadvisor.com, whose motto is "get the truth. then go," bills itself as the largest source on global travel information, "with more than 5 million unbiased reviews and opinions and covering 220,000+ hotels and attractions." It is full of honest reviews and commentary from real travelers to all corners of the globe; with a considerable quantity of information on Belize. Travelers can also upload some of the photos from their trip. Just type in the name of the property you are considering, and find out what their previous guests have to report about their stay. If there is any fly in the ointment, you can rest assured that it will show up in their reviews: terrible employees, broken-down facilities, outrageous charges, poor management, and overall disappointment, will all come to the surface. On the other hand, great facilities, good management, wonderful food, good value and a fabulous holiday experience will also appear here. A great plus, and a credit to the staff that monitor TripAdvisor, is that all submissions are reviewed for accuracy, honesty and fairness before they are posted on the site. No need to waste your time with all the nasty tit-for-tat and unrelated chatter that clogs most travel forums and chat boards. Click below to start your planning, and have a great vacation! |
